Knife-Wielding Man in ‘Grave Condition’ After Being Shot by Police in Hatfield: Report

 
UPDATE 2 p.m. Friday: The Montgomery County District Attorney's office has announced an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, standard protocol in such cases. The press release says, in part:

"At 7:31 a.m., the 911 operator dispatched Hatfield Township Police for a call from a resident reporting that a male had run through her backyard and was hiding in her neighbor’s yard. Hatfield Police responded and located the male between two woodpiles. The initial investigation indicates the police issued commands for the male to come out and show his hands, and the male did not comply. He was tazed, then ran at police who fired at and stuck the male. A knife was recovered by police. Police immediately rendered aid to the 29-year-old man, who was then transported to Grandview Hospital and is undergoing surgery." The identities of the suspect and the police are not being released at this time."

Hatfield Township Police shot a person they say was carrying a knife near homes early Friday morning, NBC10 is reporting, citing multiple unidentified law enforcement sources. NPN was unable to immediately confirm the report.

The report says Hatfield Township and county detectives focused their investigation on the backyard of a home along Leon Drive, near West Orvilla Road, in the township during the morning.

Officers arrived at 7:38 a.m., and by 7:46 had located the suspicious person and had that person at gunpoint after deploying a stun gun on the person, according to a timeline supplied by the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety. One minute later, the first call about police opening fire came in.

The man was in grave condition, sources told NBC10. EMS services were on the scene.
