Lansdale Borough was the eighth fastest-growing borough or city in Pennsylvania last year, according to
U.S. Census estimates. At the same time, the Commonwealth’s overall population declined by 13 million residents, or 3 percent, from 2020.
Lansdale had a population increase of 116 people, slightly ahead of Hazleton’s boost of 113 people and behind Downingtown at No. 7 with an increase of 138 people, per a report in the
Centre Daily Times.
As of July 2021, the Census Bureau estimates Lansdale Borough’s population to be 18,916.
According to the Center Daily Times report, the fastest-growing borough or city was Phoenixville, with an influx of 438 people in 2021. Wind Gap, in Northampton County, at No. 2 and Marietta, Lancaster County, at No. 3 saw jumps in population in the 300s.
Completing the list were New Freedom at No. 4 with 188 more citizens; Mechanicsburg at No. 5 with 175 new citizens; Valencia at No. 6 with 146 more residents and Carlisle at No. 10 with 93 new residents, per the report.
The big five cities in Pennsylvania – Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Reading and Erie – all had declines in population last year. Philadelphia remains the Commonwealth’s largest city at 1.58 million people, per the Census.
However, Philadephia had the biggest exodus of residents last year – 24,754. In second place for fastest-shrinking city in Pennsylvania: Pittsburgh with a loss of 2,346 citizens.
According to the borough
Comprehensive Plan, Lansdale’s population dropped significantly in the 1990s, but began showing more life in the early 2000s. The largest population ever recorded in Lansdale Borough.as of 2016, was 18,500 residents in the 1970s, per the plan.
