North Wales Man Accused of Stealing More Than $1,700 in Merch from Montgomeryville Home Depot

A North Wales man is accused of stealing from the Montgomeryville Home Depot multiple times over a two-week period.

James Cain, 31, has been charged with felony retail theft and receiving stolen property, following an investigation by the Montgomery Township Police Department.

Home Depot Asset Protection personnel contacted police in May, stating that an internal investigation had shown that Cain had stolen more than $1,700 in merchandise across three visits between April 23 and May 4. All three incidents were captured on surveillance footage, according to charging documents, and stolen items included a $1,099 electric lawn mower, a $649 chop saw, and multiple bags of soil.

During the alleged theft of the bags of soil, store personnel recognized Cain from the previous incidents and attempted to stop him, police said. Cain then abandoned the bags and fled the scene in a vehicle that would later be traced back to his wife, according to the complaint.

Court records show charges were filed against Cain on May 24, and he was taken into custody on June 5, at which point he was arraigned by District Judge Katherine McGill, who set bail at $2,500 unsecured.

His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on July 5 at 10 a.m. in front of District Judge Andrea Duffy.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
