Montco to Host Free Event on Strategies to Enhance Walking and Bicycling in Communities

(The following information was provided by the Montgomery County Planning Commission.)

The Montgomery County Planning Commission (MCPC) and its event partner, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), invite the public to attend a free event focused on strategies to provide for and encourage walking and bicycling in a community. The event, which can be attended virtually or in person, will take place on Thursday, June 16, 2022 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Hill School Center for the Arts in Pottstown and on Zoom.

Walking and bicycling are a critical part of our quality of life and contribute to improved health outcomes. As communities strive to make it easier for their residents to get around in safe, affordable, and equitable ways, how can they plan for these networks and encourage their residents to “get out and go?”

“Improved access to bicycling and walking, as a way to provide more transportation choices, improve health, and create better community connections, is a major goal of the county’s comprehensive plan, Montco 2040: A Shared Vision. The county made huge progress toward this goal with the development of the Bike Montco and Walk Montco mobility plans. It’s important that communities keep expanding the networks for these modes of transportation by providing the needed infrastructure to encourage walking and bicycling,” said Dr. Valerie A. Arkoosh, Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners.

This event will feature guest presentations on successful local projects and provide municipal staff, elected and appointed officials, and local advocates with some practical and cost-effective tools to add sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and other infrastructure improvements. Participants with AICP certification can earn 1.5 CM credits, whether attending in person or virtually.

A free optional tour is being offered at 4:30 p.m., prior to the presentations at 5:30 p.m., to give participants an opportunity to get a close-up look at some recent (and award-winning!) pedestrian and bicycling improvements. Participants can tour on foot or by trolley (space limited). The option of taking this tour and choosing a touring preference is available on the in-person registration form.

This event is being offered through Planning Smarter Montco 2022, an education and outreach initiative by the Montgomery County Planning Commission, and corresponds to the “Connected Communities” theme of the Montco 2040: A Shared Vision, Montgomery County’s comprehensive plan.
