A homeless man is in custody at the Bucks County Correctional Facility after he allegedly stole more than $10,000 in merch from the Hilltown Walmart between June and July.
Darrin Mitchell, 28, no fixed abode, has been charged with 15 felony counts of retail theft, one felony count of receiving stolen property, and two felony counts of organized retail theft, in connection with the investigation by the Hilltown Township Police Department.
Police were dispatched to the 1500 block of Bethlehem Pike in the Hatfield section of Hilltown Township on July 21 for a report of a retail theft in progress. Upon arrival, police located the suspect — later identified as Mitchell — in an adjacent parking lot and placed him into custody, according to charging documents.
Investigators recovered and returned $925 worth of merchandise that was found in Mitchell’s cart, police said. Stolen items found in the cart included a hard drive and 14 Roku streaming devices, the report states.
While police were still on scene, an employee with the store’s loss prevention department identified Mitchell as the suspect who had stolen $1,566.88 in merchandise a day prior, and further investigation revealed that Mitchell had stolen a total of $10,561.64 in merchandise across 14 visits to the store between June 21 and July 21, according to the criminal complaint.
No description of the other stolen merchandise was provided by police.
After being taken into custody, Mitchell was arraigned by District Judge Regina Armitage, who set bail at 10% of $10,000 cash. He was then taken to county jail after failing to post bail.
Mitchell’s next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Aug. 9 at 1 p.m. in front of Judge Armitage.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
