Local Tap, the locally sourced bar and café at 527 S. Broad Street, was honored as Business of the Month for July at the business meeting of Lansdale Borough Council on July 20 at Borough Hall.
B.J. Breish, of the borough’s Economic Development Committee, delivered the ceremony; Local Tap owner Theresa Modestine was unable to attend, so the physical presentation was held Friday morning at Local Tap.
Breish, looking natty in light suit, bright shirt and tie, started his Wednesday commentary by pointing out that he was a walking promotion for all things Lansdale. "I know you're all wondering how I cleaned up so nicely tonight, right?” He said the outfit, which he estimated at a value over $400, "was procured from the finest of local clothing and accessory establishments and is compliments of business owner Janice at
West Main Consignment.”
The total cost at the consignment shop was $10, he said, followed by alterations at
Station Square Cleaners at Pennbrook Plaza, a haircut and beard trim at
American Shave House on Walnut Street, and a membership at
Krux Fitness, also on South BroadStreet — which he noted allowed him to fit into said suit.
"All of these fine establishments share one very important quality — they’re local,” he said. But as he could only honor one local business in the month, "after cheating and trying to include as many local fine establishments as I could in one speech,” he pinpointed
woman-owned and operated Local Tap in the Pavilion Shopping Center.
He called it "a chill drinking destination, which offers a striking selection of over 20 local beers on tap, as well as local wines and spirits. This is the perfect time of year to check out Local Tap because they have a roll-up door in back, which when opened creates a wonderful indoor/outdoor open air space with plenty of comfortable seating.”
The back room also offers has a variety of games including shuffleboard and darts, and is available as an affordable rental for parties and events.
With a limited appetizer menu, Breish said, "Feel free to bring your own food while you enjoy their drinks.” And the menu includes creative seasonal cocktails with, of course, locally sourced ingredients.
Local Tap also offers a variety of events, from live music to classes on building the perfect charcuterie board. They also support local nonprofits through their month-long "give back" campaigns that raise money for worthy causes.
Breish said his favorite part of Local Tap, however, is "the vibe. This isn't your regular bar. It's a place where the bartenders recognize you and talk with you like old friends. That mood permeates the atmosphere as strangers become friends and conversations flow. This is a family friendly place as well. My young daughter loves to play shuffleboard or any of the other games.”
When you're ready to leave, or if you are driving, Breish added, Local Tap offers takeout 4-packs of beer by
Favorite Child Brewing Company for enjoying safely at home.
He added a safety warning: "Patronizing Local Tap does not equate to drinking excessively or irresponsibly; patronizing Local Tap does equate to supporting a local women-owned business giving back to our local community. One. Responsible. Sip. At a time. If you must drive, consider their plentiful take-out options (or) drink responsibly by appointing a designated driver.
"Or consider walking over,” he concluded. "I think I might have mentioned that it’s local!”
