State Rep. Steve Malagari (D-Montgomery) announced July 13 that Hatfield Township has been awarded a $354,240 grant from the state to upgrade the traffic signal at Route 309 and Unionville Pike.

"I am pleased to see the state partnering with local communities on infrastructure upgrades that promote safety and modernization,” Malagari said in a press release. “The maintenance and upgrade of this signal will make traveling through this busy intersection more efficient, and certainly safer for drivers.”

Awarded through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Green Light-Go program, the program funds can be used for light-emitting diode (LED) technology installation, traffic signal retiming, developing special event plans and monitoring traffic signals as well as upgrading traffic signals to the latest technologies.

“Hatfield Township is constantly seeking funds to improve the movement of traffic through its town. There is always more work to do, but we are committed to aggressively pursuing solutions,” Hatfield Township Manager Aaron Bibro said. ”This funding will help improve a very busy intersection and corridor. With this recent award of over $350,000, Hatfield has been awarded well over $5 million in the past several years to advance transportation projects.”

Senator Maria Collett (D-12 Montgomery/Bucks) also announced that $1,156,880 in grant funding has been awarded to improve traffic safety in her district through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT’s) Green Light-Go program.

“These grants will go a long way to improving traffic safety and efficiency for both drivers and pedestrians as they travel through some of the busiest parts of our district,” Collett said in a press release. “I was proud to work with our municipalities to help secure this funding and thank Governor Wolf and PennDOT for their attention to these important projects.”

Additional grant recipients in the 12th District include:

  • Lower Gwynedd Township – $159,440.80 to upgrade equipment at the traffic signal at Tennis Avenue and Norristown Road
  • Whitpain Township – $643,200 for upgrades at the Union Meeting Road/Jolly Road and Union Meeting Road/Township Line Road intersections.

Green Light-Go grants provide reimbursement funds for the operation and maintenance of traffic signals along critical state highways. The modernization of existing traffic signals is facilitated by the program. The program improves safety and mobility by reducing congestion and improving efficiency.
