Montgomery Township Police have released the identity of the motorcycle operator who was killed in a fatal three vehicle crash last month at the intersection of Horsham and Stump roads.
First responders were dispatched to the scene on June 21 at 9:52 a.m. for a report of a vehicle crash. Arriving police found a crash scene involving a 2013 Toyota sedan, a 2015 Hyundai sedan, and a 2009 Suzuki GSX motorcycle.
A preliminary investigation into the crash indicates the Hyundai was traveling west on Horsham Road in the left turn lane as it approached the intersection. As the Hyundai attempted to make a left turn onto Stump Road, a motorcycle that was travelling eastbound on Horsham Road collided with the sedan, causing debris from the collision strike the Toyota sedan, police said.
Police said the operator of the motorcycle, identified as Akilah Smart, of Lansdale, suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
The operators of the Hyundai and Toyota vehicles were transported to Grand View Hospital and Jefferson Lansdale Hospital for treatment of minor to moderate injuries, police said. They have since been released from care.
Both Horsham and Stump roads were closed in the area of the crash for about six hours, with traffic being allowed through just prior to 4 p.m. that afternoon.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Montgomery Township Police were assisted at the scene by units from the Fire Department of Montgomery Township, Montgomery Township Public Works, Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale, Community Ambulance Association of Ambler and JeffSTAT2, as well as fire police from Fairmount, Horsham, Perseverance, Upper Gwynedd, Telford, Worcester, Center Square and Chalfont fire companies.
