Ireland’s Almac Group Investing $93.5M into Harleysville HQ Expansion, Bringing 355 New Jobs

Almac Group, a Northern Ireland-based global contract pharmaceutical development and manufacturing corporation which chose Lower Salford Township in 2008 as the location for its North American headquarters, is putting $93.5 million into an expansion that is estimated to bring 355 jobs to the area, according to a release from the Office of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf.

Almac has added 100,000 square feet of operation space to the current 246,000 square-foot headquarters in Lower Salford, also known as its Souderton location, per the release. It will also upgrade its Pharmaceutical Development Services site on Audubon Road in Audubon and its Clinical Technologies location at Sumneytown Pike and Bustard Road in Towamencin Township.

In 2008, Almac Group representatives and then Gov. Ed Rendell broke ground alongside local dairy farmer Sam Kriebel: It was 40 acres of his ground that Almac Realty LLC acquired that year. Sam Kriebel, who owned the land since the early 1960s and abuts Central Schwenkfelder Church, transferred ownership of their remaining 17 acres of preferentially-assessed land to Churchwood Farm LLC in 2018.

Kriebel, who spoke Pennsylvania Dutch as his first language, died March 20, 2016 at the age of 94, leaving behind six children, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

According to the release, Almac is investing the $93.5 million over three years, while retaining 1,434 existing jobs. Wolf reported that Almac received a funding proposal for a $1.775 million state Department of Community and Economic Development Pennsylvania First grant, as well as a $250,000 Workforce Development grant. Furthermore, Wolf reported that Almac Group applied for the DCED’s tax credit programs.

Under coordination by Wolf’s Governor Action Team (GAT), Almac Group is now in its second expansion under Gov. Wolf. GAT has invested $17.5 billion since 2015 to support, per the release, 416 completed projects and the creation and retention of more than 180,000 jobs.

Almac Group’s operations include drug discovery (Northern Ireland), diagnostic services (Northern Ireland, United Kingdom and Durham, NC), API services and chemical development (Northern Ireland, Edinburgh), pharmaceutical development (Northern Ireland, England, Audubon, PA), analytical and solid state services (Northern Ireland, Lower Salford, PA), clinical services (Northern Ireland, UK, North Carolina, Lower Salford, Singapore, Tokyo), clinical technologies (Towamencin, Lower Salford, Tokyo, Singapore, UK), commercial services (Northern Ireland, UK, Audubon), and commercial sales and marketing (Audubon, Northern Ireland, Sweden).
