Lansdale Borough Police are seeking public assistance in identifying and locating a trio of suspects involved in the theft of a catalytic converter last Wednesday.
Police said the theft — which was captured on a neighbor’s surveillance system — occurred at 12:26 a.m. on Feb. 16 along the unit block of East Fourth Street. Surveillance footage shows a dark, four-door sedan approaching the scene from an adjacent alley with its lights off, at which point three suspects exit the vehicle and begin to work on removing the catalytic converter from what appears to be a parked Toyota Prius.
The footage shows the suspects leaving the scene with converter only two minutes after they had exited their vehicle.
“These thefts are brazened, loud and fast,” said police. “If you have any information in this or any other thefts of catalytic converters, please contact the Lansdale Borough Police Department. You can submit a tip or call at 215-368-1801.”
Police said there has been an increase in catalytic converter thefts across Montgomery County over the last few months, and anyone observing such behavior should immediately dial 9-1-1.
Catalytic converters are commonly targeted by thieves as they contain small amounts of precious metals such as rhodium and platinum. Typically, the stolen converters are sold to scrapyards, who then sell them to recycling facilities where the precious metals are reclaimed.
