Malagari Announces More Than $100K in Grants for EMS, Volunteer Fire Companies

(The following information was provided by the office of state Rep. Steve Malagari.)

State Rep. Steve Malagari, D-Montgomery, has announced seven organizations in his district have been approved for $106,624 through the Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service Grant Program.

“Finding the funds needed for our volunteer firefighters, EMS and first responders remains a top priority for my office,” Malagari said. “The number of first responders in Pennsylvania has experienced a sharp decline since the 1970s, yet the job has never been more important. The pandemic has created a greater need for EMS, but it has also complicated fundraising efforts, so I’m proud to see this money awarded to the people who provide our district with invaluable services.”

The grants approved include:

  • $15,000 for Colmar Volunteer Co.
  • $15,000 for Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale (for fire)
  • $15,000 for Perseverance Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1
  • $15,000 for Telford Volunteer Fire Co
  • $15,000 for Tylersport Volunteer Fire Co
  • $14,974 for Fairmount Fire Co. No. 1
  • $8,325 for Souderton Community Ambulance Inc
  • $8,325 for Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale (for EMS)

Eligible projects include construction and renovation of facilities, purchase or repair of equipment, fuel purchase, member training and certification, public safety education, recruitment and retention, debt reduction, overtime costs associated with backfilling positions while firefighters are training, and operating expenses incurred by a lack of fundraising and pandemic-related measures.

The announcement came during the same week when Malagari voted with his colleagues in the House to pass S.B. 739 and release $25 million in funds to help EMS. Gov. Tom Wolf signed the measure into law Thursday, releasing funds available to Pennsylvania through the federal American Rescue Plan Act.
