Fire Company Officials Provide Update on Thursday Blaze on Walnut Street

Officials from Fairmount Fire Company have provided an update to Thursday’s fire on Walnut Street that damaged nearby houses and vehicles and left a shed in ruins.

Crews were initially dispatched to the 500 block of Walnut Street around 11:30 a.m. for a report of a garage fire. Members of the Lansdale Borough Police Department were the first to arrive, and reported a fully involved fire in a detached garage/shed on the property.

“When the fire company arrived on scene, [the police report] was confirmed and the arriving units quickly extinguished the flames,” said Gavin Butler, Fire Chief for Fairmount Fire Company. “Fire company personnel also worked to protect the home on the property and an adjacent property from the intense heat, as well as three vehicles parked in the vicinity.”

Butler said the fire was placed under control in under 20 minutes, but not before the heat from the fire caused minor damage to the two homes and a trio of nearby vehicles.

“There was some heat damage to the siding of the home on the property, as well as to a couple windows of an adjacent property, which was a result of the intense heat from the fire,” Butler said. “There was also heat damage to two vehicles that were parked in the driveway and a vehicle in the neighbor’s driveway.”

No injuries were reported, however the garage/shed has been deemed a total loss, Butler said. With firefighters containing and extinguishing the fire quickly, no residents were displaced as a result of the fire.

“Damage to the homes were minor and mostly cosmetic,” Butler said. “The damage to the vehicles is a bit more significant, and unfortunately, the shed is a total loss.”

Crews officially cleared the scene at 1:15 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and that investigation has been turned over to the fire marshal, Butler said.

Fairmount Fire Company was assisted at the scene by units from the Lansdale Borough Police Department, Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale, Hatfield Fire Company, Colmar Fire Company and Upper Gwynedd Fire Department.
