Man Arrested After Attempting to Cash Fraudulent Check in Montgomery Township, Police Say

A Norristown man is facing charges after he allegedly altered a check that was made out to someone else, then attempted to cash it at a bank in Montgomery Township.

Christopher Cassidy, 44, has been charged with felony counts of forgery and access device fraud, along with misdemeanor counts of access device fraud and theft by deception, in connection with the incident.

Montgomery Township Police were dispatched to the Fulton Bank on Upper State Road at 4:02 p.m. on Aug. 24 for a report of fraudulent activity. Bank personnel advised that Cassidy was allegedly attempting to cash an altered check for $1,500 that had originally been made out to a local excavation company.

Arriving police made contact with Cassidy, who was walking away from the drive-through lane. Cassidy allegedly admitted to attempting to cash the check, adding the check was from a construction company and he had no knowledge of who issued the check. He was then taken into custody.

Cassidy was arraigned later that evening by District Judge Henry Schireson, who set bail at $5,000 unsecured. He was then released from custody, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Oct. 11 at 11:15 a.m. in front of District Judge Andrea Duffy.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause. This story was updated to reflect the child's current custody status.
