A Telford woman is facing charges after she allegedly stole nearly $500 in merchandise from Giant.
On Aug. 23, Hilltown Township Police were performing a business check at the Rite Aid on Route 113 when they were alerted to a commotion in the nearby Giant Food Store parking lot. Police said a woman, later identified as 57-year-old Ruth Emery, was walking away from the store shouting obscenities at store employees who were on the phone with county dispatch reporting a retail theft.
Emery attempted to flee towards Home Depot, however police caught up with her and escorted her back to their vehicle, according to charging documents. Giant employees told police that Emery allegedly attempted to leave the store with $493.89 of merchandise without paying, and she was subsequently arrested.
Police said Emery had three prior convictions for retail theft.
Emery was arraigned Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. by Magisterial District Judge Regina Armitage, who set bail at $25,000 unsecured. Her next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. under Judge Armitage.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause. This story was updated to reflect the child's current custody status.
