A Philadelphia man was arrested and charged after he allegedly drove a stolen vehicle through Montgomery Township while having a suspended license.
Malik Smith, 27, has been charged with receiving stolen property and driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked. He is currently in Montgomery County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.
On Aug. 23 at 3:29 a.m., Montgomery Township Police discovered a stolen vehicle and initiated a traffic stop in the area of the 700 block of Bethlehem Pike. The vehicle was reported as stolen by the Philadelphia Police Department on Aug. 6.
According to the criminal complaint, Smith, who was operating the vehicle, cooperated with police when asked to exit the vehicle. He reportedly said to police that his friend gave him the vehicle but was unable to provide the name of the friend.
Police found that Smith's license was suspended. After the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed the vehicle was stolen, Smith was taken into custody.
Smith was arraigned later that morning at 9:30 a.m. by Magisterial District Judge Elizabeth McHugh Casey, who set bail at $10,000 cash. His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. under Magisterial District Judge Andrea Hudak Duffy.
