A Huntington Valley man has been arrested and charged after allegedly speeding and hitting a utility pole while driving under the influence in Upper Gwynedd Township.
Sean Dever, 21, has been charged with disregarding a traffic lane, failing to stop at a stop sign, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, reckless driving, and DUI, in connection with the incident.
On June 22 at 1 a.m., police said they observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Township Line Road. Dever, who was operating the vehicle, reportedly disregarded the stop sign at the intersection and continued to drive until he reached the dead end of Old Morris Road and hit a utility pole.
Dever allegedly attempted to escape the scene as Upper Gwynedd Township police approached the vehicle. He ignored police when asked to exit the vehicle and continued to try to leave the area, the report states.
According to the criminal complaint, he managed to leave the area and drove onto a nearby property while continuing to ignore police commands, then headed back towards Township Line Road. Dever eventually crashed at the intersection of Township Line Road and Cathcart Road and was taken out of his vehicle and placed in custody, police said.
Dever reportedly was unable to keep his balance and stumbled during the walk toward the patrol car. He had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol from his breath, the report states. He continuously asked, "What is going on?" and claimed he was a "great driver," according to the criminal complaint.
Police said Dever was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash, as well as a blood draw for blood-alcohol chemical testing. The toxicology report would later show Dever had a blood-alcohol concentration of .192% at the time of testing, according to charging documents.
Dever was arraigned Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m. by Magisterial District Judge Edward Levine, who set bail at $10,000 unsecured. He was then released from custody, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Sept. 22 at 9:30 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Suzan Leonard.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause. This story was updated to reflect the child's current custody status.
