Healthy Shack to Open in Lansdale Early September

Two of Lansdale Borough’s favorite entrepreneurs are set to debut their newest venture next month, with a focus on creative foods and healthy eating.

Julie Palermo and Buddy Harris, owners of Lansdale Tavern since December 2019, have announced they will be opening The Healthy Shack on Sept. 6, located in the courtyard of Madison Lansdale Station at 325 Madison Street, Suite E1008 in Lansdale Borough. A grand opening celebration will be held sometime in the weeks that follow, according to the owners.

Harris said he and Palermo initially hatched the plan on their way home from a vacation in New England.

“Julie and I love traveling. And wherever we end up, we always seem to find a place that offers quick healthy options in the form of smoothies and bowls,” Harris said. “After a trip to Boston, where we frequented a similar place every morning and afternoon, we decided on the way home that we should bring this concept to our hometown. This has been a dream of some sorts for years and we just decided now was the time.”

At launch, The Healthy Shack will boast offerings of smoothies, smoothie bowls, and coffee products, as well as hummus and avocado toast. From there, Palermo said they’ll evaluate what works and add on other items, such as salads and healthy bites.

“We are working the menu in phases,” Palermo said. “The concept is to ultimately offer healthier ‘fast’ foods.”

Initial hours will be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with weekend hours being 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Staff is currently training for launch, as Palermo and Harris work on testing recipes.

“If you see the door open before we launch, feel free to stop in to say hello,” Harris said.

The duo said they’re relying on their experience as owners of the Lansdale Tavern to help guide them through opening process as well as training their new staff.

“I think our experience at the Lansdale Tavern has taught us one thing. It is impossible to be totally prepared,” Palermo said. “Opening before the pandemic was a shock. No one could have prepared for that. And I believe it taught us resilience.  Most important, it taught us the power of people, from our staff to our community. We have built so many memories and relationships on both fronts. And if we did not have the people to work with us at the tavern, to help us grow and be stronger, we wouldn't have had the confidence to build this next journey. We are thankful for the Lansdale Tavern staff and all that they have taught us about ownership and managing over these past three years.”

Regarding their chosen location, Palermo and Harris said they had looked around various areas of Lansdale Borough before settling on Madison Lansdale Station, however they never considered opening anywhere but in the borough.

“We chose Lansdale because this is our town,” Harris said. “The Lansdale Tavern has given us a chance to become friends with so many people in this community. The way the community looked out for small business, and us in particularly during the pandemic, was amazing. This town gave us the confidence to take a risk on a new venture. There was never a question where we would want to open it. We always knew it would be Lansdale and we knew we wanted it in the borough.”
