Almac Group Says Expanded Local Footprint Will Include Cold Storage Facility, Hundreds of New Jobs

Northern Ireland-based Almac Group will expand its cold and ultra-low storage capacities and just-in-time manufacturing facilities at its North American headquarters in Lower Salford Township at Wambold and Fretz roads by 100,000 square feet as part of its $65 million capital investment project set to break ground next year, the pharmaceutical and biotech contract development and manufacturing firm announced last week.

When complete in 2024, the 100,000-square-foot expansion will increase U.S. clinical supply capacity by 60 percent, according to the release. The expansion will “support the industry trend towards biologics and advanced therapeutic medicinal products,” per the release.

Almac Group will then have a 340,000-square-foot North American headquarters footprint. The expansion will have capacity increases in the following areas:

  • 200 percent increase in 2-8 degrees Celsius (35.6 – 46.4 degrees Fahrenheit) storage
  • 140 percent increase in 2-8 degrees Celsius packaging
  • 100 percent increase in 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) packaging
  • 30 percent increase in 15-25 degrees Celsius (59 – 77 degrees Fahrenheit) storage
  • 115 percent increase in Ultra-Low storage
  • 100 percent increase in just-in-time manufacturing

By 2024, Almac Group looks to create 355 new jobs in the area and is actively hiring for positions across all disciplines and experience levels.

State Rep. Steve Malagari, D-53, met with Almac Group’s Executive Directors Niall Harkin and Stephen Campbell, and Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Acting Secretary Neil Weaver last week to tour Almac Group’s clinical trial laboratories and facilities.

“I'm pleased to share that Almac has … will bring 355 new jobs to Montgomery County, PA. As a former bio-scientist myself, I'm excited about this investment into our area for the biotech and life science industry, as well as for clinical supply chain operations,” Malagari posted on Facebook.

The $65 million expansion is part of the $93.5 million three-year investment Almac Group and the Office of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced in July. The firm looks to also upgrade its Pharmaceutical Development Services site on Audubon Road in Audubon and its Clinical Technologies location at Sumneytown Pike and Bustard Road in Towamencin Township.

Under coordination by Wolf’s Governor Action Team (GAT), Almac Group is now in its second expansion under Gov. Wolf.

Almac is investing the $93.5 million over three years, while retaining 1,434 existing jobs. Wolf reported in July that Almac received a funding proposal for a $1.775 million state Department of Community and Economic Development Pennsylvania First grant, as well as a $250,000 Workforce Development grant. Furthermore Almac Group applied for the DCED’s tax credit programs.

Almac Group’s operations include drug discovery (Northern Ireland), diagnostic services (Northern Ireland, United Kingdom and Durham, NC), API services and chemical development (Northern Ireland, Edinburgh), pharmaceutical development (Northern Ireland, England, Audubon, PA), analytical and solid state services (Northern Ireland, Lower Salford, PA), clinical services (Northern Ireland, UK, North Carolina, Lower Salford, Singapore, Tokyo), clinical technologies (Towamencin, Lower Salford, Tokyo, Singapore, UK), commercial services (Northern Ireland, UK, Audubon), and commercial sales and marketing (Audubon, Northern Ireland, Sweden).
