Visitors are invited to visit Pennypacker Mills to experience a new StoryWalk® installed along its scenic grounds. The first book on display is “George Washington and the General’s Dog,” a true story that happened at Pennypacker Mills.
The Montco StoryWalk at Pennypacker Mills is a fun, educational activity that allows adults and children to enjoy both reading and exercising along the property’s paved driveway. The books chosen are for beginner readers and designed for children to read aloud as they walk from one sign to another.
At Pennypacker Mills, this enjoyable activity starts as you enter the main gate off Haldeman Road. Visitors can follow the story as they walk on the scenic grounds of this historic site. When finished, a public restroom is nearby, and visitors are welcome to a free guided tour of the mansion. Every two months, the StoryWalk will change to provide a new reading adventure for repeat guests.
The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. Conceived to inspire parents, teachers, and caregivers to take children outdoors for physical activity and to learn, StoryWalk helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy activity for both adults and children.
Visitors are welcome to enjoy the Pennypacker Mills StoryWalk after hours, just park in the first parking lot and walk the driveway to read the story. This project was launched in partnership with the Montgomery County Office of Public Health and is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health's Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant.
The first Montco StoryWalk was installed at the Norristown Farm Park and remains open for visitors to enjoy. To learn more about the Montco StoryWalk, click here.
About Pennypacker Mills
Looking for an interesting place to visit that’s close to home? Pennypacker Mills is the answer! This historic site is open year-round for free guided tours of the home of Pennsylvania Governor Samuel Pennypacker and his family. Known for its collection of 18th and 19th century decorative arts, furnishings, personal and official documents, the story of this famous Pennsylvania family reflects the lives of those who lived in Montgomery County in the early 1900’s.
Pennypacker Mills is open Tuesdays through Saturdays: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sundays: 1 to 4 p.m., with the last tour at 3 p.m. each day. Pennypacker Mills is closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. Tours take approximately one hour and are free, with a suggested donation of $2 per person.
Pennypacker Mills is operated by the Montgomery County Division of Parks, Trails, and Historic Sites. Pennypacker Mills is located off Route 73 (Skippack Pike) at 5 Haldeman Road, Schwenksville, PA 19473.
