Registered Sex Offender from Towamencin Federally Indicted on Child Pornography Charges

A registered sex offender from Towamencin Township who was facing dozens of child pornography charges in Montgomery County has been federally indicted on similar charges.

Matthew Aubin, 44, of the 1500 block of Staley Circle, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of receipt and attempted receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography. Records indicate he’s been transferred from the Montgomery County Correctional Facility into federal custody.

Aubin, who was convicted on child pornography charges in April 2012, has had to register as a sex offender since December 2012. He was again arrested in February 2021 and charged with 75 counts of possession of child pornography, following an investigation by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators with the county detectives were contacted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding a Yahoo email account belonging to a user who had sent themselves 36 digital files of child sexual abuse on Dec. 14, 2020. All images depicted young females between the ages of 10 and 12 years old that were either posed nude or in sexually suggestive ways, the complaint states.

After tracing the IP addresses associated with the Yahoo email account, investigators determined the account belonged to Aubin, and a search warrant was executed at his home along the 1500 block of Staley Circle on Feb. 24, according to the complaint.

While executing the warrant, the complaint states investigators retrieved Aubin’s phone, which was secured for a forensic download. In total, investigators said they recovered 370 images and videos of child sexual abuse, depicting girls between the ages of 8 and 12 years old posing nude and engaging in sexual activities.

Several weeks after his February 2021 arrest, Aubin posted $50,000 cash bail and was released from county jail. Court records show his bail was increased to $100,000 cash and later revoked in June 2021.

Officials with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to North Penn Now that all county-level charges against Aubin have been withdrawn following the federal indictment. Court records show all 75 child pornography charges were withdrawn during a standby trial at the county courthouse on Aug. 1.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
