Early-A.M. Skateboarding OK'd By Lansdale Parks & Rec Committee

Early-rising skateboarders will now be able to hit the halfpipe and ramps at dawn at Fourth Street Park.

At Wednesday’s meeting of Lansdale Borough’s Parks & Recreation Committee, a rule change was unanimously approved that will immediately change the opening time of the Carl Saldutti Jr. Skate Park from 8 a.m. to sunrise.

The committee noted that the earlier opening time will bring the skate park in line with every other Lansdale park facility (save the pool system, which requires staffing). And, lest there be pushback concerning potential noise issues, committee member B.J. Breish noted that people can currently start playing basketball at sunrise — which is likely to generate more noise than skateboarding.

Mayor Garry Herbert applauded the rule change, noting that it would greatly help to reduce the overflow in his email inbox.

In other actions, both the borough Parks and Recreation Committee and the Code Enforcement Committee voted to recommend that full council approve a change in the permitting process for food trucks in borough parks. The motion proposes that Parks & Rec Director Courtney Meehan take over the process to allow food trucks in pools and parks, rather than routing the requests through Code Enforcement.

The borough’s current ordinance regulates food trucks to show where and how they can operate. But the ability for parks and recreation staff to approve trucks on pool and park property is not part of the original ordinance.

Based on that ordinance, a permit would be required to bring in food trucks to pools and parks. With the food truck ordinance amendment, authority for approvals will now be directed to Meehan and her department, streamlining the process and potentially increasing food service options at the pools and elsewhere.
