A Montgomery County man is behind bars after police identified him as the suspect responsible for a string of thefts from vehicles across Telford, Souderton and Hilltown.
Investigators said there were reports of numerous thefts in early April from vehicles in Telford and Souderton boroughs, primarily along Central Avenue and the adjoining roads. At least seven victims have since been identified, including one who had model train boxes stolen that were worth more than $1,000, according to police.
Investigators said they believed a person living along the 100 block of Eighth Street in Souderton may have been involved, and when they drove past the residence, they found a parked vehicle on the street full of random belongings that had been piled inside. Suspecting the items were stolen, police took a closer look from outside of the vehicle and allegedly saw the stolen train boxes among the items, according to charging documents.
Residents at the location said 25-year-old Nicholas Skidmore was living out of the car with his girlfriend, the report states. The residents’ stated Skidmore was friends with one of the people living there, and they had recently noticed numerous bags of items were appearing inside of their home that did not belong to them, police said.
As police continued to interview the occupants of the home, they heard the sound of glass breaking and saw Skidmore fleeing on foot after jumping out of a rear window, the report states. He was ultimately taken into custody several days later.
A search warrant was later executed on the vehicle, which uncovered numerous items that had been linked to thefts across Souderton, Telford and Hilltown. Total value of the recovered stolen items was in excess of $6,000, police said.
As a result of the investigation, Skidmore has been charged with felony counts of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property, along with misdemeanor counts of theft from a motor vehicle, disorderly conduct and prowling at nighttime. He’s currently awaiting his preliminary hearing in county jail in lieu of $40,000 cash bail.
Court records show that Skidmore has nearly a dozen other active cases against him from multiple municipalities across Montgomery County dating back to 2020. Charges range from theft and drug offenses to DUI and felony hit and run, according to court documents.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
