Two teens are facing charges after they allegedly conspired to steal a DoorDash driver’s vehicle during a delivery in Lower Gwynedd earlier this year.
The investigation began on Jan. 21, when police were dispatched to the 500 block of Knight Road at 12:48 a.m. for a report of a stolen vehicle. On arrival, they met with a female victim who stated that she was making a delivery for DoorDash and when she turned back towards her vehicle, she saw a male enter her driver’s side door and drive away.
Investigators allege that two suspects — identified as Nyrell Campbell, 19, of Philadelphia, and Nasir Brookins, 19, of Elkins Park — conspired to steal a car together on Jan. 20, and they selected Lower Gwynedd Township because they believed they would meet less resistance in the suburbs.
A third, unidentified juvenile female was involved in the conspiracy, but was not present when the vehicle was stolen, police said.
The three teens selected a home with no lights on, and between 7:30 p.m. and 11:56 p.m., they had four deliveries made to the address using their own phones and debit cards, police said. The first four deliveries all resulted in failed attempts to take the delivery driver’s vehicle, with investigators citing a variety of reasons, including multiple occupants in one vehicle, a witness present during a different delivery and an initial lack of nerve, according to charging documents.
After the fourth failed attempt, Campbell drove the juvenile female home, then returned for the fifth attempt, police said. When the fifth delivery order arrived, Brookins allegedly entered the victims vehicle while she was walking the order to the door, and then fled the scene with Campbell following in his car, the report states.
Police said that Brookins and Campbell parked the vehicle at Linwood Gardens in Cheltenham Township, then sold the vehicle to a junkyard for $400 several days later, splitting the money between the two. The report also states that the victim lost upwards of $1,700 worth of personal items that were stored in her vehicle, including clothes and toys for a newborn baby.
According to court records, Campbell and Brookins were charged on April 15 with felony counts of robbery of a motor vehicle, attempted robbery of a motor vehicle, dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities, theft by unlawful taking, attempted theft by unlawful taking, and related conspiracy offenses, along with one misdemeanor count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Brookins was taken into custody that day and was released on $50,000 unsecured bail. His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on April 28 at 10 a.m. in front of District Judge Edward Kropp Sr.
Campbell remains at large at this time with a warrant out for his arrest, and it is unclear if the juvenile female has been charged as juvenile proceedings are not publicly available.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
