The second phase of The Route 309 Connector project – a planned highway between Route 309 in Hilltown Township and the Northeast Extension (I-476) in Towamencin Township that looks to get trucks off neighborhood roadways – broke ground earlier this month in Hatfield Township with a ceremony featuring Hatfield Township officials and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation representatives, according to Dan Sokil of The Reporter Newspaper.
The third phase of the project is in the design stage, according to PennDOT Acting District 6 Executive Louis Belmonte in the article. This stage would connect the roadway from Hatfield-Souderton Pike to a new 309 interchange in Hatfield and Hilltown townships, per the report.
The first phase of the project, per the report, was completed in 2012 along Wambold Road in Towamencin Township. The current second phase, referred to as Section HT2, began in January, and will connect Allentown Road to Township Line Road near Hatfield-Souderton Pike in Hatfield Township in a 2.3-mile stretch.
The project calls for sound barrier walls between Elroy and Cowpath roads.
The second phase of the project includes a new road alignment from Allentown Road to Cowpath Road, and refurbishing Township Line Road from Cowpath Road to Hatfield-Souderton Pike in Hatfield Township and Franconia Township, per the report.
In a press release, Hatfield Township said the purpose of the 309 Project is to “get trucks off the local roads and out of the neighborhoods.”
United States Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-1, State Sen. Maria Collett, D-12, state Rep. Steve Malagari, D-53, and Montgomery County Commissioners Chair Dr. Val Arkoosh also attended the groundbreaking.
Commuters should take caution in the busy area of Allentown Road and Wambold Road, where not only the 309 Connector Project is getting underway, but also an industrial development across the street by developer Core5 at Park LLC.
