Lansdale borough will be hosting its first Lansdale Open Gardens Day event this summer, in conjunction with the borough’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
The event is scheduled for July 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be an open house tour that is free to the community. Homeowners who have signed up will make their gardens available to be toured. There will be a PDF map available, so visitors can create their own itineraries.
Jenniah Caldwell, the founder of the event, is a member of a Facebook gardening group for Lansdale called Lansdale Seed and Plant Exchange. She and the other group members found it was a shame there was no garden tour in town.
“One thing gardeners’ really love to do is talk to other gardeners, see their gardens, and share information,” Caldwell said.
She proposed organizing an event on the community page and then later pitched the idea to the 150th Anniversary Committee to make it an official town event.
The pandemic sparked the revival of “Victory Gardens” from World War II as more people gained interest in gardening over quarantine. Caldwell hopes that the event provides community members with an opportunity to see personal gardens, talk to experienced gardeners or people starting out, and get tips and tricks on how to use the space that you have at your own home and create a garden.
The event will also be partnering with the Garden of Health Food Bank. According to its website, they “distribute fresh produce and food free of the top eight allergens to food pantries, low-income senior housing and community groups in Montgomery and Bucks Counties in Pennsylvania.”
“We didn't feel like it was the type of event that we wanted to charge admission to,” Caldwell said. “But the Lansdale Seed and Plant Exchange Facebook Group is still very interested in promoting philanthropy.”
Selected gardens on the tour will have donation boxes on the owner’s property, so people can drop off food for donation.
“People get to go on this free community event and see these gardens, but then they're also participating in supporting the people in the community who need a little help because it's tough out there right now with inflation and with everything that's been going on with the pandemic,” Caldwell said. “The people who need to utilize a food bank, the numbers have grown, and it's not the typical homeless people in the street who need this type of food. It could be your neighbor, it could be the people that you don't know that they're food insecure, but for whatever reason, they need help and the Garden of Health Food Bank is really great in providing that type of help.”
