Former Lacrosse Instructor Accused of Sending, Requesting Nude Photos from Juveniles Gets Probation

John Mallozzi, 22, of Horsham.

A Horsham man who was accused of sending and requesting nude photos to and from juvenile females while working as an instructor at a private lacrosse camp in Lower Gwynedd has been sentenced to probation.

As part of a plea agreement, John Mallozzi, 22, of Horsham, was sentenced to five-years’ probation on Wednesday afternoon, after entering a guilty to plea to one misdemeanor count of corruption of minors. Additional charges, including felony counts of disseminating sexually explicit material to a minor and criminal solicitation of child pornography, were dropped in exchange for the plea, court records show.

Common Pleas Judge Henry Hilles also ordered that Mallozzi comply with “restrictive conditions of probation,” as well as avoid contact with the victims and witnesses and undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation.

The investigation was launched by the Whitpain Township Police Department in July 2019, after receiving a child-line referral regarding then-20-year-old Mallozzi, who was serving as an instructor at the private camp. The complaint states that a group of juvenile female instructors were discussing how "creepy” Mallozzi was, when one of them showed a fully nude photo that Mallozzi had allegedly sent to another underage female instructor during the previous year’s camp.

The complaint states that a male counselor then reported the incident to his boss, resulting in Mallozzi being terminated as a camp counselor.

Later that month, investigators spoke with the juvenile female counselor who displayed the nude photo of Mallozzi during the discussion. The juvenile female stated that during the summer of 2018, her friend—identified as juvenile victim #1—had received a message via Snapchat of Mallozzi standing fully nude in front of a mirror, the report states. The juvenile female told police that she used her phone to take a picture of the image on her friend’s phone, so as not to alert Mallozzi that they were taking a screenshot of the photo, according to the report. (Note: When a screenshot is taken of a message within the Snapchat application, the sender is notified.)

Police were able to secure the photo, which clearly shows a fully nude Mallozzi in front of a mirror, the complaint states.

Two days later, police spoke with juvenile victim #1, who stated that she had corresponded with Mallozzi via Instagram and Snapchat in the past, with most conversations centered on lacrosse camp. Juvenile victim #1 added that she was at the juvenile female counselor’s house during the summer of 2018 when she received the nude Snapchat image from Mallozzi, but she did not reply to it, the report states. Her friend then took a photo of the image with her phone, and both of the juvenile females deleted Mallozzi from Instagram and Snapchat, the report states.

Investigators then spoke with Mallozzi, who allegedly confessed to asking numerous juvenile females to send nude photos to him, but added that all of his requests were ignored and no nude photos were received, the report states.

Charges were filed against Mallozzi on Aug. 12, 2019, including felony counts of criminal solicitation of child pornography and dissemination of explicit sexual material to a minor, and misdemeanor counts of corruption of minors and harassment.

Sex Abuse Charges Still Pending Against Mallozzi

Though Mallozzi has been sentenced to probation for the August 2019 charges, another set of charges continues to make its way through the county court system.

Court documents indicate that investigators from the Horsham Township Police Department filed charges against Mallozzi on Jan. 21, 2021, including two felony counts of aggravated indecent assault, four misdemeanor counts of indecent assault and two summary counts of harassment, in connection with two females who alleged that Mallozzi sexually assaulted them.

According to the criminal complaint, Horsham Township Police were contacted by a female victim in October 2020 who stated that she was sexually assaulted by Mallozzi on June 26, 2020. The victim told police that she had given a ride to Mallozzi — who was allegedly intoxicated at the time — but when she stopped in front of his home, Mallozzi allegedly unbuckled both of their seatbelts and proceeded to sexually assault the victim, the report states.

The victim stated that despite her efforts to resist and repeatedly telling Mallozzi to stop, he proceeded to sexually assault the victim for more than seven minutes, police said.

The criminal complaint states that as police were continuing their investigation into the incident involving the first victim, a second victim came forward in late-December 2020 to report that she had also been sexually assaulted by Mallozzi in January 2016 — when the victim was 13 years old.

In that incident, the victim told police that Mallozzi had offered to give her a ride home from work, however Mallozzi instead allegedly drove her to the Hatboro-Horsham High School parking lot where he forced himself on her for approximately five minutes, the report states.

The second victim told police that Mallozzi ignored her pleas to stop, according to the complaint.

Mallozzi was taken into custody on Jan. 21 and arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Harry Nesbitt III, who set bail at $10,000 cash. The following day, bail was posted for Mallozzi and he was freed from custody.

Court records show the last action taken regarding the new charges was a pre-trial conference on May 24 in county court. The notes from that hearing indicate Mallozzi was to be placed on the Call of the Trial list, however records do not show that action having occurred at this time.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
