Towamencin Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will celebrate Constitution Day on Friday, Sept. 17, on the Swede Street steps of Montgomery County Courthouse, Norristown, from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

Proclamations and remarks declaring Constitution Week, Sept. 17 to Sept. 23, will be made by invited guests. Invitees include U.S. Representative Madeleine Dean, Montgomery County Commissioner Joseph Gale, representatives from the Montgomery County Bar Association, and Lansdale Mayor Garry Herbert.

At 4 p.m., Towamencin and other DAR chapters across the country will ring bells observing the 234th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.

“While Independence Day is a well-recognized and beloved national holiday, fewer people know about Constitution Week, an annual commemoration of the living document that upholds and protects the freedoms central to our American way of life,” said Denise Doring VanBuren, National DAR President General.

The national DAR initiated the observance in 1955, when the service organization petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week. Congress adopted the resolution, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law in 1956.

“We hope that all Americans will learn more about the Constitution and its immense impact on our nation,” VanBuren said.
