Tropical Storm Ida blew through Montgomery County with heavy rains and strong winds that caused extensive damage to property and homes all over the county, and homeowners are picking up the pieces left in Ida’s wake. Jeanne Sorg, Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds, wants residents to know that obtaining a copy of their deed is easy and inexpensive.
The Recorder of Deeds office does not retain original documents – originals documents are generally given to the grantee at settlement, and deeds usually begin with “This Indenture….” However, if your original deed was destroyed and you need a certified copy, copies can be obtained from the Recorder of Deeds office in a number of ways.
“Homeowners who need a copy of their deed due to Tropical Storm Ida damage can call my office and we will provide copies of your deed or satisfaction piece free of charge,” said Sorg. Homeowners can call the Recorder of Deeds office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. at 610-278-3289.
Homeowners can also login in to the Recorder of Deeds online Public Access System and print a certified copy of their deed for $10.50. The Public Access System is available by visiting www.montcopa.org/rod and choosing “Public Access System” on the left hand side of the page.
“Don’t fall for third party companies who want to take advantage of you during this vulnerable time by charging you more to obtain a copy of you deed,” said Sorg.
