Woman Facing Felony Retail Theft Charges After Stealing from Wegmans Twice in One Week, Police Say

A Philadelphia woman is facing felony retail theft charges after she allegedly stole more than $600 worth of items from Wegmans at the Montgomery Mall between Oct. 7 and Oct. 14.

Tashia Davenport, 37, has been charged with two felony counts of retail theft and two felony counts of receiving stolen property, in connection with the investigation by the Montgomery Township Police Department.

According to the criminal complaint, police were dispatched to Wegmans at 10:20 a.m. on Oct. 14 for a report of a Black female — identified as Davenport — who was known to store security due to a previous retail theft from the market. Store security told police that Davenport entered the store and allegedly placed the following items into her cart before exiting without paying:

  • Two Red Bull 12-packs
  • One Mountain Dew 12 pack
  • 12 Similac baby formula
  • 1 Ensure nutritional shake pack

Police said they located Davenport in the Wegmans parking lot, and she was subsequently taken into custody. Total value of the stolen items was $279.64, according to the complaint.

Investigators then reviewed surveillance footage of the Oct. 7 theft, which allegedly showed Davenport stealing 26 items with a total value of $359.16. When shown the footage, Davenport confirmed it was her in the footage, police said.

Felony level charges were filed against Davenport due to five prior retail theft convictions, police said.

Davenport was arraigned on Oct. 14 by District Judge Andrea Duffy, who set bail at $5,000 cash. Davenport was then transported to county jail after failing to post bail, however she was released from custody on Oct. 26 after Judge Duffy switched bail to unsecured in exchange for Davenport waiving her preliminary hearing.

Her next court appearance is formal arraignment at county court, which is scheduled for Dec. 8 at 9:30 a.m.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
