Lansdale Public Works Committee Prepping for Additional Merck Sewage Flow Beginning Next Year

Lansdale's water treatment facility.

Nine years after Merck began sending 300,000 gallons of sewer flow each day from Upper Gwynedd to the Lansdale sewer treatment plant – which called for new pipelines and sewer upgrades – the pharmaceutical giant wants to send 150,000 gallons per day of additional sewer flow beginning next year — and Lansdale is prepping now to update its infrastructure again.

According to an article from The Reporter, Merck may cover the cost of the upgrades. However, according to Lansdale Councilman BJ Breish, Merck wants a proposal from Lansdale on what another round of upgrades would mean for the increase in sewage flow.

The borough’s wastewater system can handle 4.5 million gallons of sewage each day. In 2013, a study revealed it would cost $3 million to upgrade capacity at the plant. The upgrade was completed in 2016, per the article.

Merck wants to start sending 100,000 gallons each day in 2022, and the remaining 50,000 gallons in 2023, per the article.

A capital project of this caliber may not see upgrades just at the Lansdale plant; there is discussion that treatment could be added to procedures at Merck’s facility.
