Off-Duty Police Officer Shot While Intervening In Domestic Incident in Montco, Investigation Launched

An off-duty police officer from West Norriton Township was shot on Wednesday morning while attempting to intervene in an outdoor domestic incident in Norristown.

According to the district attorney’s office, Norristown Police were dispatched to the intersection of East Airy Street and Dekalb Pike at 9:48 a.m. for a report of a shooting. Responding officers found the victim, identified as Anthony Marano, suffering from a gunshot wound to his side.

Marano was airlifted to Penn Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia for treatment of his injuries.

Investigators said Marano was off-duty and in his personal vehicle when he was stopped at the intersection and observed a Black male — later identified as 18-year-old Otis Kendrick — arguing with a Black female. Marana became engaged in an argument with Kendrick, at which point Kendrick punched the side of Marano’s vehicle, police said.

Marano, who was unarmed, exited the vehicle and confronted Kendrick, at which point Kendrick allegedly brandished a handgun and shot Marano a single time in the side, police said. Despite being wounded, Marano was able to disarm Kendrick, who then fled the scene on foot, according to the report.

Kendrick was taken into custody by Bridgeport Police following a brief foot pursuit, police said. Kendrick remains in custody.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Montgomery County Detective Bureau’s Crime Tip Line at 610-278-3648.
