A homeless man is facing nearly a dozen charges after he allegedly attempted to cash a check in another man’s name at the Univest Bank in Chalfont Borough.
Harvey Zimmerman, 60, no fixed abode, has been charged with two felony counts of forgery, three felony counts of identity theft, two felony counts of receiving stolen property, one felony count of access device fraud and misdemeanor counts of bad checks and possession of counterfeit access device, in connection with the May 20 incident.
Police were dispatched to 195 East Butler Avenue for a report of a subject actively attempting to cash a bad check. The subject was described as a Black male wearing a black shirt and gray pants, according to the criminal complaint.
Upon arrival, police made contact with the suspect — identified as Zimmerman — however he identified himself as the man whose name was on the check, the report states. Police spoke with an employee who said Zimmerman handed them the check along with a passport in the other man’s name, however they became suspicious when Zimmerman could not answer basic questions regarding the account and his appearance did not match the image the bank had on file, according to the complaint.
Police did not indicate how Zimmerman came to be in possession of the account holder’s check or passport.
As police attempted to identify Zimmerman, he reportedly began to sweat profusely and continued to claim he was account holder, the report states. Zimmerman attempted to provide police with an address matching the account owner, however he could not provide the place of residence, street name of full zip code, police said.
The report states that the bank employee provided police with a copy of the image on file, showing that Zimmerman was not the account holder. Zimmerman was then taken into custody.
Court records show Zimmerman was arraigned on May 20 by Magisterial District Judge Regina Armitage, who set bail at 10% of $75,000 cash. He was then transported to the Bucks County Correctional Facility after failing to post bail.
Zimmerman’s next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on July 20 at 3 p.m. in front of Judge Armitage.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
