A lawsuit filed against Bucks County Register of Wills Linda Bobrin was withdrawn recently.
The lawsuit was brought against the county row officer by Universal Life Church Ministries and Rev. Stephen H. Moser, one of its ministers who lives in Bucks County.
The action sought an injunction by a federal judge against Bobrin’s office for alleged discrimination against Universal Life Church Ministries’ officiants, who obtain their authority through a low-cost online program, and are able to perform weddings.
The Bucks County Register of Wills noted at the time of the filing that they had issued 303 marriage licenses to couples married by a Universal Life Church Ministries-affiliated officiant since the start of last year.
The Washington-based Universal Life Church Ministries claims it is one of world’s largest religious organizations, having ordained 20 million individuals and a number of celebrities.
Earlier this month, Universal Life Church filed a notice that they planned to dismiss the lawsuit.
Bobrin said Saturday she “vigorously opposed” the claim of discrimination and added herself and her predecessors have long accepted wedding performed by officiants from Universal Life Church Ministries
“The Clerk appreciates that the ULC has voluntarily withdrawn their lawsuit when their misunderstanding concerning the policies of Bucks County in fully recognizing the validity of marriages officiated by ULC ministers was made clear to them,” a statement from Bobrin’s office said.
The office said they offer traditional marriage licenses with an officiant as well as self-uniting licenses with no officiant required.
