Family Displaced Following Sunday Morning Fire on Winding Road, Cause Remains Under Investigation

A local family has been displaced from their home after a fire in their detached garage extended to a portion of their home early Sunday morning.

Multiple area fire companies were dispatched to the 500 block of Winding Road in Lansdale Borough at 12:27 a.m. on March 21 for a report of a residential fire. Police who were first to respond to the scene reported a fully-involved fire in the garage of a single-story home.

Rick Lesniak, the Emergency Management Coordinator and Fire Marshal for Lansdale Borough, said the fire rendered the garage as a total loss, and the rear-right corner of the home sustained damage including melted siding, a broken window and a hole that firefighters had to cut in the roof. Additionally, a neighboring home sustained some melted siding due to radiant heat from the fire, Lesniak said.

The fire was placed under control around 1 a.m., and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene, according to Lesniak.

Due to the fire, the owners of the home have been displaced and are currently residing at a temporary location, Lesniak said.

In addition to the fire, area residents reported hearing several explosions associated with the blaze. Lesniak did confirm that he also received reports about the explosions, which he attributed to combustible contents that are typically stored in garages, including spray cans and propane cylinders.

Responding units included Fairmount Fire Company, Hatfield Fire Company, North Penn Fire Company, Towamencin Volunteer Fire Company, Lansdale Borough Police and the Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale. In addition, Colmar Fire Company provided coverage for Fairmount Fire Company, including responding to a fire alarm call on West Fifth Street.

Lesniak said he wanted to remind residents to check their smoke detectors, and have a proper escape plan in the event of a fire.
