A Hatfield man is facing felony aggravated assault charges after he allegedly engaged in fighting multiple police officers during a traffic stop on March 4.
Aaron Walters, 23, has been charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and institutional vandalism, along with misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats, simple assault, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and summary counts of harassment and driving without headlights in connection with the incident.
According to the criminal complaint, Hatfield police observed a vehicle driving without headlights at 8:18 p.m. and initiated a traffic stop along the 500 block of South Main Street. Upon advising dispatch the vehicle’s registration, police were informed that Walters had a warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear in court on simple assault charges.
Police advised Walters of the reason for the traffic stop as well as the outstanding warrant and requested that he turn off his vehicle, the report states. After confirming the warrant, police attempted to take Walters into custody, however Walters began to resist arrest and repeatedly struck one of the officers with a closed fist, according to the complaint.
Police said they then took Walters to the ground, where he continued to resist arrest and stated “I am going to kill someone today.” Walters continued to resist, though police were able to handcuff him, bring him to his feet and place him into the rear of a patrol vehicle, police said. Once inside the vehicle, Walters then kicked two officers and used his handcuffs to carve marks into the rear seat, according to the complaint.
The report indicates that as a result of the scuffle, Walters broke a Watchguard body-worn camera valued at $995, as well as a Taser holder valued at $128 and combined uniform damage of $192.98.
Walters was arraigned on all charges during a preliminary hearing on March 5 in front of Magisterial District Judge Ed Levine, who set bail at $50,000 cash. Court records indicate that Walters posted bail on March 6, and all charges were held against him during his preliminary hearing on March 10.
Walters next court appearance will be a formal arraignment at the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas, however a date for his arraignment has not yet been set.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
