Montgomery Township Man Charged After Attacking Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Police Say

A Montgomery Township man is facing charges after he allegedly attacked a police officer who was attempting to render medical aid.

Joseph Sharon, 52, of the 300 block of Harvard Drive, has been charged with aggravated assault, along with simple assault, resisting arrest, harassment and disorderly conduct in connection with the March 29 incident.

Upper Gwynedd Police were dispatched to the area of Rosemont Avenue and Green Street at 9:25 p.m. on the night of the incident for a report of a suspicious male who had been yelling outside for more than 20 minutes. Arriving officers located the man — later identified as Sharon — and stated that he appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Responding officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, according to the criminal complaint, however when one officer attempted to detain Sharon for a medical evaluation, Sharon allegedly became aggressive, police said.

Sharon reportedly began to repeatedly punch one of the officers in the head and face, before tackling the officer to the ground, police said. As assisting officers worked to take Sharon into custody, he allegedly continued to resist arrest by kicking and striking police with his hands and feet, according to the criminal complaint.

He was ultimately handcuffed and leg shackled, according to police. The complaint also notes that Sharon was subdued by a shot of Ketamine applied by personnel from the Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale.

Sharon was officially charged on March 29, however he was not taken into custody until June 9. Court records indicate Sharon was arraigned by District Judge Suzan Leonard, who set bail at $10,000 cash. He was then taken to county jail after failing to post.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records, the affidavit of probable cause and interviews with police.
