Towamencin Township Bearing Manufacturer SKF Named GM Supplier of the Year for Ninth Time

For the ninth time, Swedish roller and ball bearing and seal manufacturing company SKF, whose North American headquarters is in Towamencin Township at the former Penn Reels site at Forty Foot and Tomlinson roads, was named a General Motors Supplier of the Year for 2020 at its 29th Supplier of the Year Awards, according to MyChesCo.com.

The award is given to GM’s top 2020 suppliers from 16 countries who have exceeded in providing innovative technologies to customers in the automotive industry. According to General Motors, this year SKF was one of 122 suppliers recognized at the awards ceremony.

According to the article, SKF has been used in GM vehicles for more than 70 years. As of recent, SKF supplies GM with bearings and seals for its all-electric vehicles.

Furthermore, SKF supplied bearings used in building ventilators during the global COVID-19 pandemic, per the article.

GM executives chose the award winners based on a criteria including product purchasing, global purchasing, customer care and aftersales and logistics.

SKF USA, a subsidiary of Aktiebolaget SKF, opened its $35 million, 84,000-square-foot U.S. headquarters in Towamencin in 2009. Philadelphia Suburban Development was the developer of the property and purchased it from Penn Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Company in 2009 for $5 million, according to property records. The property was transferred to The Robert Nicoletti Family Trust for $5.5 million in 2019.
