Montco High School Athletic Trainer Charged with Furnishing Alcohol to Teens Prior to Fatal Crash Last August

35-year-old Kelsey Martin, of Pottstown, will not be processed until her preliminary hearing, meaning no mugshot is currently available.

An athletic trainer with Owen J. Roberts High School in Pottstown is facing misdemeanor charges in connection with last year’s fatal crash in North Coventry Township, which claimed the life of 18-year-old Louis Carbajal.

Kelsey Martin, 35, of Pottstown, has been charged with six counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor, in connection with the Aug. 10, 2020 incident.

Investigators allege that Kelsey provided alcohol to four teens during a gathering at her home along the 100 block of Center Avenue on Aug. 9, 2020. According to the criminal complaint, the teens then got into a 2012 Acura ZDX and left Kelsey’s home around 5 a.m. on Aug. 10, 2020.

At approximately 5:40 a.m., police were dispatched to the 1200 block of South Hanover Street in North Coventry Township for a report of a serious vehicle crash with entrapment. Arriving first responders found the vehicle in two parts with two people injured outside of the vehicle and the driver trapped inside. The fourth teen had already been privately taken to the hospital at that time, police said.

Investigators said the driver — identified as 18-year-old Connor Quinn — lost control of the vehicle while attempting to navigate a slight left turn in the roadway, resulting in the vehicle crossing over the southbound lane and striking a utility pole. Quinn, who was a standout wrestler at Owen J. Roberts, was charged in November 2020 with homicide by vehicle while DUI and related offenses.

According to a release from the district attorney’s office, Martin knew the teens through her job as an athletic trainer for the high school. Additionally, investigators allege that Martin provided alcohol to two of the teens on a previous occasion.

A preliminary hearing for Martin has been scheduled for Aug. 12 at 1 p.m. in front of District Judge Edward Kropp Sr. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Lauren Marvel, who is captain of the Pottstown Community Justice Unit.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
