On behalf of all of the partners who made “Black is Beautiful” a possibility, Round Guys Brewing Company delivered $2,451.30 in donations to the Ambler Chapter of the NAACP. Partners included Well Crafted Beer Company, Zuckerman Honickman, Deer Creek Malthouse, Horizon Label LLC, and BSG CraftBrewing all donated materials or labor toward joining Weathered Souls’ Black is Beautiful beer movement.
The beer, a 10% ABV oatmeal stout, sprouted from an idea Marcus Baskerville had to actively eliminate police brutality and inequity during the early days of 2020’s tumultuous protests. Baskerville, co-owner of San Antonio-based Weathered Souls Brewing Company, spoke candidly about his disappointment and continued frustration with inequity during a Round Guys Radio Network: Inside the Brewery episode I recorded with him last summer.
The impetus for Round Guys Brewing Company to enter into the collaboration stemmed from a discussion Scott Rudich, founder and co-owner of Round Guys, engaged in on social media.
“Many brewers didn’t want to rock the boat,” said Rudich.
Rather, they decided it would be more prudent to remain on the sidelines. Meanwhile, if you look back at the Resilience Collaboration, a partnership involving thousands of breweries who came together to help those displaced by California wildfires, there wasn’t a debate. The breweries together just did what was right.
It was time for Round Guys Brewing Company to lead by example and continue its already vibrant and storied history of serving the community, which in Rudich’s own words “means the entire community.”
