2 Teens Stabbed While at Playground at Oak Park Elementary

UPDATE: Feb. 22, 10:52 p.m. - North Penn School District has issued the following statement:

This evening at approximately 5:30 pm, local police were called to Oak Park Elementary School campus due to a report of a stabbing. It was after school hours and not related to any school activity. There were no students in the building at the time, including Extended School Care who had all been picked up by then.

As of the time of this email, we are still learning details as it is an ongoing police investigation and we do not have more information to share except that the suspect is in custody.

Tragic events such as this are always upsetting. I want to assure you that the safety of the Oak Park community is our number one priority. Thank you to our local police and NPSD security who responded swiftly to this evening’s events.

UPDATE: Feb. 22, 10:25 p.m. - Hatfield Police Chief William Tierney has confirmed to North Penn Now the age of the stabbing suspect as being 15-years-old, and the victims being a 13-year-old male and a 9-year-old female.
 
Tierney reiterated that the public is safe, and the suspect is in custody.

UPDATE: Feb. 22, 10:16 p.m. - Hatfield Police just issued their first statement on the incident via their Crimewatch page. The statement reads, in full:

On February 22, 2021 at approximately 5:20 PM, Hatfield Township Police Officers responded to the Oak Park Elementary School located at 500 Squirrel Lane in Hatfield Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania for a reported 911 call of a stabbing to the rear of the school. Officers located two victims in the area of the rear exterior playground who each suffered multiple stab wounds. Both victims are minors. They were transported by Volunteer Medical Service Corps (VMSC) to Lehigh Valley Hospital for further medical treatment.

The male subject responsible for this attack has been taken into custody by the Hatfield Township Police Department and is no longer a threat to the community. He is a minor and is not being identified at this time. This is an ongoing investigation so no additional information is being released at this time.
 
It is unclear whether police plan on releasing any additional information at this time. Typically, police do not release additional details in regards to arrests and incidents involving juveniles.
 
Initial reports indicated that the victims were aged 13-years-old and 15-years-old, however credible sources have since indicated the stabbing suspect was the 15-year-old, and the victims were his 13-year-old brother and 9-year-old sister. North Penn Now has reached out to Hatfield Police Chief William Tierney to confirm which set of ages is correct, and we will update this article with his response once it is received.

UPDATE: Feb. 22, 9:31 p.m. -
Multiple corroborating sources have confirmed to North Penn Now that the stabbing suspect is the sibling of the victims.
 
Additional information regarding the ages of the victims conflicts with the dispatch notes and those mentioned by other media outlets, so we have removed them from this report until there is official confirmation.

UPDATE: Feb. 22, 6:43 p.m. - Lansdale Police have informed North Penn Now that they have detained a subject — also a juvenile — in Lansdale Borough relating to the stabbing incident. Lansdale Police are assisting Hatfield Police in their investigation, and ask that the community keep the families of the victims in their thoughts and prayers.

Hatfield Township Police are currently at the scene of a stabbing that occurred early Monday evening at Oak Park Elementary.

First responders were dispatched to the intersection of Squirrel Lane and Pine Street at 5:20 p.m. for a report of a victim that was stabbed. Sources told North Penn Now there were two teenagers stabbed with one being transported as a class-one trauma victim to Lehigh Valley Hospital and the other victim being transported as a class-two trauma victim to Lehigh Valley  Hospital.

Sources said the older victim sustained multiple stab wounds to their head. The teens were playing at the school’s playground at the time of the incident, according to reports.

It is unclear how the stabbing occurred. 6ABC is reporting that police said a suspect fled the scene, but police did not provide a description.
