Former Montco DA Bruce Castor Will Lead Trump Impeachment Trial Defense Team

Former Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. has many titles on his curriculum vitae: Montgomery County Commissioner, Acting Attorney General of Pennsylvania, Solicitor General.

On Sunday, he added one more – Trump impeachment defense attorney.

The Office of Donald J. Trump announced Sunday the appointment of trial lawyers Castor Jr. and David Schoen to head Trump’s impeachment defense legal team for a second impeachment trial. Castor Jr. and Schoen came on board after five of Trump’s lawyers quit last week due to conflicts in strategy in the upcoming trial.

According to the release, Castor Jr., 59, and Schoen agree that the impeachment is unconstitutional.

“I consider it a privilege to represent the 45th President,” Castor Jr. is quoted in the release. “The strength of our Constitution is about to be tested like never before in our history. It is strong and resilient. A document written for the ages, and it will triumph over partisanship yet again, and always.”

Schoen was poised to join Jeffrey Epstein’s defense team when the latter was charged with sex trafficking, but Epstein killed himself in a New York jail days later, according to Business Insider. Schoen also represented Roger Stone during the Mueller investigation.

Castor Jr., a Republican, served as District Attorney for Montgomery County from 2000 to 2008, and moved on to being elected as Commissioner twice, taking office Jan. 7, 2008. Castor ran again for district attorney in 2015, however he was defeated by then-First ADA Kevin Steele in a campaign marred by the Bill Cosby controversy, per 6abc.

His time as acting Attorney General came in the wake of the conviction of Democrat Kathleen Kane, who lied to a grand jury about leaking confidential investigative information to smear a rival. Castor Jr. was a top deputy to Kane at the time.

The former prosecutor is also the recipient of numerous recognitions and awards for his legal talent. He received the Trail Advocacy Award from the National Association of Government Attorneys in 1995 for his work in investigating homicides. He has also been honored by the Pennsylvania General Assembly and was named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer 13 times over by Philadelphia Magazine.

Castor Jr., who received his law degree from Washington and Lee University, was inducted into the Pennsylvania Police Hall of Fame in 2007 as a prosecutor. In 2009, he was named a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America.

In Fall 2020, Castor Jr. left his Ardmore firm Rogers Castor (now rebranding as Rogers Counsel) for Philadelphia personal injury and criminal defense firm van der Veen, O’Neill, Hartshorn and Levin.
