The Store Outfitters in Towamencin to Close After Nearly 70 Years

A long-running business is coming to an end, as The Store Outfitters at the Towamencin Village Shopping Center recently announced they plan to close in the coming days.

The Store, which has stood at the location for the last 69 years, provides men’s working clothes, men’s footwear, dance clothing, outdoor and hiking gear and more. Even while the shopping strip remained largely vacant over recent years — aside from buildings housing Wells Fargo Bank, Wendy’s, Boston Market and an independent Verizon retailer — The Store Outfitters remained open for business.

The closure announcement comes at a time when the Towamencin Village Shopping Center is being redeveloped into a more modern iteration, dubbed “The Shops at Town Square.” In January, the Towamencin Township Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a conditional use request from  from property owner Philadelphia Suburban Development Corporation (PSDC) to allow a health club use in the entertainment lifestyle overlay district, which blankets the 98,000-square-foot shopping center.

That approval cleared the way for Planet Fitness to become the first new tenant at the former Sears Hardware location. Other businesses rumored to be interested in opening at The Shops at Town Square included PJ Whelihan’s and Andy’s Diner, however further discussion never came to fruition.

Aside from SEARS Hardware, Genuardi’s Market was the former primary anchor store at the shopping center. As years came and went, so did many businesses – Little Professor Books, Comics A to Z, Eckerd Drug, Headquarters for Hairstyling and Via Marconi Pizza Pub.

The shopping center’s inception dates to 1952, when Irv Lopoten opened The Store, aka The Old Mill, in an old general store next to the Tennis-Lukens Cemetery. Lopoten sold off the land, relocated to the shopping center, and the rest is local history.
