The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office has announced they will conduct an investigation following an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Pennsburg Borough on Tuesday night.
Upper Perkiomen Police were dispatched to Long Alley at 7:41 p.m. on Feb. 9 for a report of a man armed with a sword that was threatening to harm others. Responding officers encountered a male suspect — later identified as 27-year-old Trey Bartholomew, of Valley Court in Pennsburg — who was reportedly yielding a samurai-type sword.
According to the release from the district attorney’s office, as one police officer arrived to the scene with his vehicle lights and siren activated, Bartholomew allegedly charged towards the officer. Neighbors at the scene reported hearing three gunshots, which struck Bartholomew, the release states.
Police on scene immediately attempted to render first aid, the release states, however Bartholomew was pronounced dead at the scene my emergency medical personnel. The sword was recovered near Bartholomew’s body, according to the district attorney’s office.
As is protocol with all officer-involved shootings in Montgomery County, detectives from the Montgomery County Detective Bureau responded to the scene to investigate the shooting. The names of the police officers involved are not being released at this time.
A spokesperson for the district attorney’s office said that due to the active investigation, further interviews are unavailable.
