Diabetic Emergency Possibly Contributed to Fatal Allentown Road Crash, Police Say

Towamencin Township Police have issued an update to their investigation into a late-November fatal vehicle crash on Allentown Road that killed 23-year-old Shayna Bergey.

During last week’s Towamencin Board of Supervisors meeting, Towamencin Police Chief Tim Troxel told the board that investigators believe Bergey may have suffered a diabetic emergency prior to the crash, which could have rendered her unable to maintain control of her vehicle. In a follow up interview with North Penn Now, Troxel provided additional details of the Nov. 30 crash, but cautioned that drawing a definitive conclusion about the cause of the crash would be difficult – if not impossible.

Troxel stated that diabetic supplies were found inside of Bergey’s vehicle, and that a blood-sugar test taken at the scene of the crash revealed that Bergey’s blood-sugar was dangerously high — upwards of four times the amount that would be deemed normal or healthy. However, Troxel added that certain types of trauma can elevate blood-sugar, so while it can be inferred that the diabetic emergency played a role in the cause of the crash, the claim cannot be made with any medical certainty.

First responders were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on Allentown Road in the area of the Tennis Lukens Cemetery just after noon on Nov. 30. Officials initially said the crash was a near-head-on collision between a minivan and a sedan, with the sedan suffering significant damage. It was later confirmed that the sedan, driven by Bergey, crossed over into oncoming traffic and struck the minivan.

Crews worked to rescue Bergey, and both she and the driver of the minivan were transported from the scene via ambulance for treatment of unknown injuries. Bergey would later succumb to her injuries on Dec. 4.
