A Hatfield Township woman is facing felony charges after she allegedly walked into a home on East Third Street in Lansdale with a dog in one hand and a knife in the other, then threatened to kill the dog.
Madison Smiley, 20, has been charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and burglary, along with misdemeanor counts of simple assault, possessing an instrument of crime and reckless endangerment, in connection with the Aug. 13 incident.
According to the criminal complaint, police were dispatched to the 100 block of East Third Street at 7:19 p.m. for a report of an armed subject. Arriving officers found a man and a woman on the porch — later identified as the victims — holding down Smiley until police arrived, the report states. The female victim shouted that Smiley had pulled a knife on her, at which point Smiley was detained and placed in handcuffs, police said.
While police were searching Smiley, she reportedly said “that guy was gripping me up so f—king hard, then I bit him,” the report states. Then, as police were placing her into the rear of a vehicle, she allegedly said “I don’t know why I love you, Mom, but I’m going to kill you.”
Smiley declined to issue a statement or comment further, police said.
The victims told police that Smiley walked into their house with a knife in one hand and a dog in the other, then stated “I’ll kill this dog,” the report states. At that point, there was a scuffle for the knife and the male victim “bearhugged” Smiley to prevent her from leaving, according to the complaint.
The male suffered “obvious” bite marks to his arm, and the female victim suffered a laceration to her right arm as a result of the scuffle, police said. Surveillance footage from the home and the neighbor’s system corroborated the victims’ account of the incident, police said.
The owner of the home told police that Smiley was neither invited nor allowed into the home, according to the report. The criminal complaint does not make any distinction regarding whether Smiley was known to the victims or the homeowner.
Smiley was arraigned the following morning by District Judge Maurice Saylor, who set bail at $5,000 cash. She was then remanded to county jail in lieu of bail, and her next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Sept. 1 at 9:45 a.m. in front of District Judge Ed Levine.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
