Former Sears Site at Montgomery Mall to be Used as County Vaccination Site After Prior PEMA Plans Scrapped

During Monday night’s meeting of the Montgomery Township Board of Supervisors, Chairwoman Tanya Bamford announced that the former Sears site at the Montgomery Mall will indeed be used as a county vaccination site beginning next week.

“We were not at liberty to discuss this at our last meeting, but Montgomery Township has been working for the last several months with Montgomery County to prepare the former Sears location at the Montgomery Mall as a vaccine distribution site,” said Bamford. “I am pleased to announce that the mall site will open on May 3.”

Initially, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) had planned on using the location as one of the state’s mass vaccination sites, distributing approximately 42,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine per-week. However, those plans were scrapped when the state accelerated their vaccination efforts and pursued a more regional, county-by-county vaccination approach.

Bamford said the township was excited to have the site being used as part of the county’s vaccination efforts, as it would provide easy access for residents as well as residual economic benefits.

“First and foremost, the Montgomery Mall site will provide convenient access to these lifesaving vaccines for all who reside and work within the township,” said Bamford. “Beyond convenient access, this site will bring thousands of consumers to our mall on a weekly basis, which we anticipate will have a positive economic impact for our community at a time when it is so clearly needed.”

In additional to the vaccination site at the Montgomery Mall, Bamford said the township has had discussions with private pharmacies about conducting pop-up vaccination clinics at the Montgomery Township Community and Recreation Center. Bamford added that the situation “remains fluid,” with vaccine availability fluctuating from day to day.

No plans have been finalized for a pop-up clinic at the current time, but Bamford said the board remains open to the idea.

“Regardless of where clinics are held within our township, our board and staff remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community by contributing to COVID-19 vaccination efforts,” Bamford said.
