Burglar Found Rummaging Through Closets at Artisan’s Alley in North Wales, Police Say

A homeless man was arrested last Thursday after police allegedly found him rummaging through the closets inside of the Artisan’s Alley building in North Wales Borough.

Douglas Steinbrecher Jr., 29, no fixed abode, has been charged with felony counts of burglary and criminal trespassing, along with a summary charge of disorderly conduct, in connection with the incident on April 22.

According to the criminal complaint, police were dispatched to the 400 block of East Walnut Street for a report of a suspicious male walking barefoot throughout the business. Upon arrival, police made contact with the complainant, who stated Steinbrecher was on the second floor of the building walking through multiple rooms, and she added she was unaware of why he was there, the report states.

The complainant added that Steinbrecher had entered a closed closet and began opening multiple containers prior to police arrival, according to the report.

Police then made contact with Steinbrecher, who stated that he was there to do flooring work, the report states. Steinbrecher denied going through the closet and said he believed he was being set up by an unknown actor, police said.

The report states that police located multiple bins and objects that were opened in a closet. A short time later, Steinbrecher admitted to entering the closet and looking for items to take and change his clothes with, police said.

North Wales Police Chief Michael Eves said there are several photography studios located on the second floor of the building, and he added that Steinbrecher had moved some security cameras that were located at the entrance to the building.

As a result of the incident, Steinbrecher was taken into custody and arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Paul Leo, who set bail at $10,000 cash. Steinbrecher was then taken to county jail after failing to post bail, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing in front of Magisterial District Judge Suzan Leonard at 1 p.m. on May 6.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
