Rep. Malagari Announced $13 Million Awarded to North Penn, Souderton School Districts

(The following information was provided by the office of state Rep. Steve Malagari.)

State Rep. Steve Malagari (D-Montgomery) announced yesterday that North Penn and Souderton school districts received a collective total of $13.1 million from Pennsylvania’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund.

North Penn received $9.3 million and Souderton received $3.8 million.

“I’ve heard from countless families throughout my district that they want their children back in the classroom five days a week for in-person learning,” Malagari said. “This funding will help North Penn and Souderton school districts achieve this goal while ensuring students are on track academically.”

Schools must use at least 20% of this money to address learning loss and the social, emotional and academic needs of underrepresented students, including students from low-income families, students with disabilities, English learners, migrant students, students experiencing houselessness and children in foster care. Schools may use the rest of the funding for a wide range of activities, including food service, professional training, technology purchases, sanitization and cleaning supplies, summer and after-school programs, and mental health supports.

“Students, teachers and faculty alike will face unique challenges as they pull away from virtual learning. This funding will ensure the transition goes as smoothly and seamlessly as possible,” Malagari said.

The funding is part of the American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden.
