Local Firefighters Battle Second Early Morning Blaze In Two Days

The Towamencin Volunteer Fire Company battled an early-morning blaze Friday in the Inglewood neighborhood of the township. Several people were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, but did not require hospital care or transport.

Crews responded at 3:16 a.m. Friday for a fire in an apartment building on the 1000 block of Pioneer Road. According to officials, a fire was discovered by the resident in a ground floor kitchen of the building, which is occupied by five people in four separate apartments.

The fire was quickly contained in the kitchen, although heavy smoke had spread rapidly throughout the rest of the building, according to fire officials. Two of the residents were housed by the Red Cross, while three others said they would stay with relatives.

The fire was placed under control at 3:49 a.m. and is being investigated by state and local officials to determine the cause. Besides Towamencin firefighters, Upper Gwynedd Fire Department, Fairmount Fire Company of Lansdale, North Penn Fire Company,  Lansdale Volunteer Medical Service Corps, Towamencin and Lansdale police departments responded, and the Upper Salford Fire Company was on standby.

The overnight fire was the second in the North Penn region in the last two days. They serve as a reminder for all residents to have working smoke detectors, to maintain cleanliness and to check their batteries to ensure they’re in working order, said officials, who added that this weekend is "Change Your Clocks, Change Your Detector Batteries” time.
