One Man Killed in Sunday Morning Crash on Sumneytown Pike

Upper Gwynedd Township Police and Montgomery County Detectives are investigating a fatal vehicle crash that occurred near the intersection of Sumneytown Pike and Valley Forge Road on Sunday morning.

According to Upper Gwynedd Police Chief David Duffy, police were dispatched to the 900 block of Sumneytown Pike at 8:28 a.m. on Oct. 18 for a report of a two-vehicle crash. Duffy said that a Chevy Monte Carlo — driven by a 72-year-old male from Rosyln —was traveling eastbound on Sumneytown Pike when a Subaru Forester — driven by an 82-year-old female from Lansdale — was attempting to make a left turn into the westbound lane of Sumneytown Pike from the Sumney Forge Shopping Center.

The Monte Carlo then impacted the Forester, Duffy said.

The driver of the Subaru was uninjured in the crash, but was taken to Abington Lansdale Hospital by the Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale as a precaution. The 72-year-old male who was driving the Monte Carlo was airlifted via JeffSTAT helicopter to Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Duffy said the road remained closed for several hours after the crash so police and county detectives could conduct a thorough investigation.

“Charges, if any, will be determined as the investigation progresses,” Duffy said.

Upper Gwynedd Township Police were assisted at the scene by units from the Towamencin Township Police Department, Upper Gwynedd Township Fire Department, Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale and Harleysville Ambulance.

The scene was cleared and the roadway was reopened at approximately 1:30 p.m., police said. The name of the man that was killed has not been released.
